38 Things I Believe…

Wednesday was a super exciting day of travel (sarcasm intended), starting with an early flight out of LA.

The Starbucks line was ridiculously long and of course we waited, because….priorities.

I’ve mentioned it before, but if you don’t have TSA Pre-Check….do it.  You don’t have to wait in the long security line. You just walk through the metal detector and that’s it.

LAX was a hot mess…literally.  They had fans blowing to keep the airport cool while it’s under construction.

I picked up some McDougall’s instant oatmeal before I left.  Instant oats are great for flying.  The flight attendants add the hot water for you and voila…yummy lunch.  The irony wasn’t lost on me that I was eating instant oats and watching the Pioneer Woman make yummy recipes!

So….while I sat for 4 hours on the airplane, I created a list for today’s post.

38 Things I Believe… (in no particular order)

1.  In hostess gifts
2.  Handwritten thank-you notes (preferably on personalized stationary)
3.  Lifting others up
4.  Daily exercise
5.  Sunshine is good for the soul
6.  Champagne
7. Lots of travel
8.  The best way to sightsee is by foot
9.  Manners. Always.
10.  Being early
11.  Daily talks/emails with my grandmothers
12.  Good hotels
13.  Daily grocery shopping for fresh produce
14.  Compassionate living towards all people and animals.  All life is valuable.
15.  Knowing the difference between happy and joyful
16.  Generosity of spirit. Be a giver.
17.  Spending money on the right shoes
18.  Good coffee
19.  Best friends
20.  Early to bed early to rise
21.  Smiling
22.  My dogs are family
23.  Eating Dessert!
24.  Reading physical, tangible books
25.  Weekend brunch
26.  Green smoothies
27.  Sunscreen
28.  Fresh flowers
29.  Baking from scratch
30.  Tipping well
31.  Hot chocolate before bed
32.  Big salads
33.  Always having a new challenge
34.  Learning for the purpose of personal growth and betterment
35.  Put your money where your mouth is and vote with your dollars.
36.  Diamonds are never too big
37.  Have an opinion. Know what you want and go get it.
38.  My husband

Obviously, my beliefs extend to politics, religion, and sex, but I’m saving those for another day when I really want to stir the pot!

Silly or serious…share some of your beliefs!

Do you bring your own snacks with you when you fly?  What are your go-to foods?

What are your airport/airplane pet peeves? Not covering your mouth when you cough on a plane, bringing stinky food, and (no joke this happened today) washing your hair on the plane!  A woman was slowly pouring bottled water over head and massaging it into her hair.   Gross.

On that note…Choose Joy!!!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Thank you SO much!!!!????

  • Sarah @ SarahRuns26

Lol…you see alot of strange things in an airport/on the plane! Stinky food in the plane is the worst! I always wonder what people are thinking!

I 1000% agree with you on handwritten thank you notes! My mom always made us do them as kids and I still do them (without prompting) today! Also, birthday cards. I believe in those. It isn’t the same getting an e-card!

    • JenChoosesJoy

I still mail birthday cards too!

  • Melissa

What a fun post! Hope you had a very safe flight home!

-I always have snacks on hand. I think I snack more than my 5 yo :)

-Pet peeve on air planes are most definitely coughing/sneezing without even a thought to cover your face. All I think about are the germs flying around!! :( yuck!

-I believe: That kindness gets you farther in life.
Being happy with what you have. &
    Not comparing yourself to others.

    Have a wonderful day!

    • JenChoosesJoy

I love the quote “comparison is he thief of joy.” It’s so true!

  • Katherine @ Sweet. Southern. R

Love this post, thanks for sharing! I believe in firm handshakes (even women), football Sundays, and that October is the best month.

    • JenChoosesJoy

      I’m so excited for October!!!

  • Robin Smith

Always bring snacks on the plane – usually a protein bar, water, sometimes I sneak in some pretzels :)
    I also believe in:
    – Long walks/hikes in the woods
    – Pets are family!!
    – Working hard for what you want
    – Never taking anything for granted…
    Good post today!!

    • JenChoosesJoy

Love yours, too!! I’ve been making efforts to pause and be grateful. :)

  • Gretchen Braun

Being early is definitely a big belief of mine! also being polite to everyone- from the janitor to the waitress…there’s no reason to be rude! I also believe fresh air and water are the cure for everything :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

Big yes to fresh air and water!!!

  • Angie @ Pace with Grace Blog

How on earth would someone thinks its appropriate to wash your hair on a plane? I just don’t understand. Its a pet peeve of mine when people kick/bump the back of my seat. I understand it can happen but over and over is a little ridiculous.
I do bring my own snacks on flights- usually fruit, a bar or some nuts/trail mix.
I enjoyed reading your beliefs! Definitely agree- dogs are family and happy and joyful are different! Also, fight for what you believe in, a good run is a natural antidepressant and take risks!

    • JenChoosesJoy

A run works wonders for my mood!

  • Jennifer Bruce

I believe in always trying to find the good in people! I almost always bring snacks on the plane, usually something easy and portable like Luna or Quest bars, Kind bars, or some fruit. Ummm washing your hair on a plane is insane, and I also think coughing without covering your mouth is gross (in any situation).

    • JenChoosesJoy

Big YES to finding the good in people!

  • Tracy Elliott Evans

Love your post but now I can’t wait for your “stir the pot” post! :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

My husband usually edits my posts to avoid angry readers…lol!

  • Jenny K

<3 I love your list. And ending with husband was precious.

    Joyous vs. happy… interesting point.

  • Jenny K

p.s. I’m pretty sure I believe in all of these… and donuts, oh, I believe in the power of donuts (and pizza, too). xxoo

    • JenChoosesJoy

I believe in donuts and pizza, too!!!

  • AmandaM

Awesome post! I believe in all of yours and love the diamonds one :) I believe in watching as much t.v. you want.

    • JenChoosesJoy

Even better if it’s trashy reality shows!

  • Jennifer

I bring snacks on the plane, usually some type of luna bar and Starbucks. I have seen some cray cray things on the plane like people putting their bare feet on the arm rest. NO, just no. Eating a tuna sandwich (fine when not on a plane). Loud talkers…just stop. Your list is great! I believe in watching reruns of the Golden Girls and laughing all day long.

    • JenChoosesJoy

Now I need to watch Golden Girls…it’s been too long!!

      • Jennifer

I just got a tank top that says, “Dorothy in the streets. Blanche under the sheets.” HAAAHAHHA!

  • Running ‘N’ Reading

WHAAAAT?!? A woman actually put water in her hair while ON the airplane, in her seat? That is disgusting! OH, that is the best one I think I’ve ever heard, Jen; unbelievable. I’m with you on the coughing one, too; I work in a hospital, so some of those germ-y things really bother me. I’m so glad you made it through the madness; that Starbucks line was CRAZY!

    • JenChoosesJoy

I can only imagine how germ-y the hospital feels!

  • corrie

I LOVE this list! It is sooo YOU!!
And I believe in not washing your hair on airplanes…and wearing shoes on board 😉

  • Victoria Calderon

I would just die if I saw someone trying to wash their hair on the place like that. Why?!?! But that list was perfect. AMEN! :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

Isn’t that nuts?!! And, thank you!!!

  • Running With Erasers

I am huge on hand-written thank you notes! I was raised that way and will raise my kids that way!

    • JenChoosesJoy

I love that you’re encouraging your kids to do it, too!

  • Rachel Denler

I agree with SO many of these.
    Other things I believe in:
buying good cheese – the kind you have to buy at a specialty shop.
Go for the workout- even if you’re tired or don’t want to. You’ll never regret it if you do.
Tell your loved ones that you love them as often as you can.
Sunflowers- they will always lift your mood.
Rainy days are a gift! (unless it’s your wedding day).
Buy the good sports bra. Even if you don’t want to spend the money!
These are just a few :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

YES to the good sports bras!!!

  • Abby

I still send handwritten thank you notes for everything. Love that you do this too.

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Love it!!!

  • Amanda B @ Cupcakes and Miles

Ew! She was washing her hair on the plane?! Gross! Although I once saw a man clipping his toenails while at the mall.

I love your list! Some things I believe in… I believe in me, I believe in true love, I believe in being loyal, and I believe golden puppies are the closest we will ever come to perfection. 😉

And…ever since about the eighth grade when my motion sickness decided to become a thing, I have had a hard time flying. My in-flight snacks of choice (and by that I mean the items I won’t dare step on a plane without) are Twizzlers, beef jerky, ice cold bottle of water, and a handful of Dramamine.
