CB’s Birthday and My Vegiversary!

I joined my friends for a 5:30am Monday run…49 degrees!!!

The cool temp felt amazing and I got to wear THUMBHOLES!!!!

Make sure you’re using the rewards program at Juice Bar….it was my FREE SMOOTHIE DAY!!

I added a new sign to my coffee station….

And, potted some new orchids for my entry.

For dinner I made a pumpkin ravioli with cauliflower ‘alfredo’ sauce….so good!

Usually we run track on Tuesday, but it was Christi Beth’s birthday and she wanted to celebrate with a big group run!

The birthday girl!!!

Being the wonderful person that she is, she asked for food pantry donations in lieu of gifts. :)

Runners celebrate birthday’s with ginger shots at Juice Bar.  We’re wild and crazy like that, lol!

I took a quick shower and headed to Memphis.  I was invited to spend the next few days at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital!

Of course, I packed plenty of fruit for the road trip….

and found a taco salad on the way….because…Taco Tuesday!

And, lastly….September 15th marked my 7th Vegiversary!!!  A vegetarian saves the lives of 25 land animals per year, so I’ve saved 175 animals and that makes my heart happy!!!!

Vegetarians or vegans….how long have you been meat-free?!!

What’s your track or speed work this week?

Big debate for fall weather: capris and a tank OR shorts and long sleeves?

I’ve been meat free for…8 or 9 years this December. I’m not quite sure which it is because it’s hard to remember a time when I wasn’t vegetarian. I’m eating fewer and fewer animal products, and would say that I’m about 90% vegan now, too. And I am such a freak: I hold in my body heat too well and I’ve been running in shorts and a tank in these temps (as opposed to just a sports bra!)

I’ve gone vegan at home, but still struggle at restaurants. I’m definitely a work in progress!!

  • Maureen

I am so jealous of your thumb holes and cool weather debate! I live in south Florida so there’s probably about two weeks a year that it’s cool enough to even consider capris or long sleeves!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      I’ll trade you…especially this winter!!!

  • cheryl

I am a shorts and long sleeves–but it would have to be way colder. Surprisingly, it has still been quite warm here. I am trying to enjoy it, but I am a winter person at heart :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

I’m in Memphis right now and it’s definitely still hot!!

I would love to know more about your veg life! Happy Vegiversary! Its such an accomplishment and one I hope to transition to soon. I’m about 80% veg but my boyfriend is not. Is your husband veg also? If not, how do you balance both meal plans?
I love reading your blog-all the way from Texas!

    • JenChoosesJoy

He became a vegetarian a year after me. I challenged him to try it for Lent and it stuck!! Also, I wouldn’t being meat in the house, so that helped. ????

  • Kimberly

Happy Vegiversary! I hope you enjoy your visit to St. Jude. IT’s one of my favorite charities!

    • JenChoosesJoy

It’s been an incredible trip…thank you!!!

Capris and long sleeves. Does that put me in the minority?! I wear capris in the summer, especially for long runs, so it isn’t much of a change for me! I had 800m repeats for speedwork this week. It was a great workout, other than that I had to do it on the treadmill because the wind was crazy here!

    • JenChoosesJoy

My best friend is a Capri and tank runner, too! Great job doing speed on the treadmill!!!

  • Lynn B

Congrats on your Vegiversary! Saving animal lives is very important to me. Way to go! Please post that ravioli recipe. It looks amazing.

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Will do and thank you!!!!

  • Robin Smith

Congratulations on your Vegiversary! I have been vegetarian for 30 year! Yikes – can it really be that long?! I was vegan for awhile but
it was really hard – not so much food wise but the full vegan life was difficult. I am pretty close and strive to get closer…..
I am a biker not a runner but I love both shorts and capris – weather dependent, of course! Just crossed 1300 riding miles for the year – targeting at least 1500. Woohoo!

    • JenChoosesJoy

30 years is incredible!!!!! I’m mostly vegan but sometimes eggs and cheese still happen. And, congrats on your mileage!!!!

  • Heather Davis

Congrats on Vegiversary. Shorts and long shirts for me. That is incredible about saving so many animals, I had no idea. Have a great day

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Thank you!!!!

  • Jamie Whittendale

I have been vegetarian for 4 years, one of which I was totally vegan (still am with the exception of eggs!). Shorts and long sleeves 100%. I hope we’re getting the cauliflower ‘alfredo’ sauce recipe soon! :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

I dabble in vegan, but eggs happen. It’s my aborted white sauce recipe!! I’ll post it soon.

  • Angie @ Pace with Grace Blog

I am liking the shorts and long sleeves. I did a 5 mile temp run this morning but its back in the 70s here so it was shorts and a tank today!

    • JenChoosesJoy

It’s warmed up again here. I sweated way too much this morning!

  • AR

Shorts and long sleeves. Here in Canada we won’t be able to show our legs for quite some time as soon as it gets cooler (and it already did). So we hang on to the shorts as much as possible! 😉
    Congrats for your Vegiversary!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Thank you!!!!!

I have done month long trials of vegetarian and vegan but nothing long term at this point. The article was very eye-opening especially the graphs. It is definitely a lifestyle/choice that I am seriously considering in the near future. Thanks for posting the link to the article.

I stay in shorts and a tank as long as possible, I tend to heat up within the first mile and stay hot.

    • JenChoosesJoy

I’m the worst about overdressing and shedding layers throughout the run!

  • Liz

That looks like a fun birthday celebration!! I wish we had a juice bar near me.. although it is probably a good thing we dont… ALL of my money would go there! LOL. Congrats on your vegiversary! :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

I spend entirely too much money there!

  • bubblyrunner

Happy Vegiversary! I had 400m repeats on the agenda this morning, which is my favorite speed workout! I actually just bought a pair of Oiselle capris for fall running–I think I’m digging capris and tank vs. the long sleeve shirt. However, that won’t stop me from buying more long sleeve running shirts, let’s get real.

    • JenChoosesJoy

Lol! I’m super excited to wear new fall clothes!

  • linda

I’ve been meat free for about a year but not a strict vegetarian.

    And shorts. Always shorts!

    • JenChoosesJoy

I’m with you on the shorts!

  • Suzy Slane

I used to be a vegetarian during my teen years but I don’t think I actually ate any vegetables. It was all ketchup chips and chocolate bars.

    • JenChoosesJoy

I have a friend that is a total junk food vegan!

  • Amanda B @ Cupcakes and Miles

175 animals?! Wow! That makes my heart happy too! I just love that!

And, shorts/long sleeves all the way.

    • JenChoosesJoy

      I’m with you!!!

  • Beth

I have been a vegetarian for 3.5 years and love it! I eat fish on occasion, but that’s a rarity (unless I’m home in New England where the seafood is the best!). You should def share the recipe for the pumpkin ravioli with cauliflower ‘alfredo’ sauce! That sounds like the perfect warm and comforting dish.

    • JenChoosesJoy

It’s my favorite white sauce recipe!!!

  • Jenny

I live in South Florida, so it’s shorts year-round. There might be a few cool mornings in January where i’ll throw on a long sleeve shirt though. I’ve been vegan since I was 25 and I’m almost 50, so, half my life!!! Congratulations on your Vegiversary!

    • JenChoosesJoy

Wow!!! I’m so inspired by your veganism!!!

  • Sheena

Ginger shots, nice! For fall I usually wear long sleeves and shorts or capris and a tank. I tend to overdress and get hot so I’m really trying not to do that.
