Franklin Classic and My Cranky Achilles

Time to catch up….starting with the Franklin Classic 10k!

It’s a local race benefiting Mercy Community Healthcare with a 10k and 5k option.  It’s notoriously hilly and hot and this year did not disappoint.  I’m not a short distance runner, but I love running with my friends.

I had a course PR of 48:01. And, we were all smiles at the finish!!

Fleet Feet brought some rad shades!  Jason brought his photobomb skillz.

And, I got to meet Jimbo Gray who you might recognize from his comments on my blog!

We all went over to Frothy Monkey for celebratory breakfast!

And a new addiction, thanks Michael!!

Tuesday:  All aboard the Hot Mess Express!  If you’ve been watching me on Periscope, you know I am definitely a hot mess!!

No track…just a recovery run after the race.  Other than I tight achilles, I felt great during the run! Post-run was a different story.  My achilles got progressively worse throughout the day.  :(

I had an acai bowl for lunch to cancel out some of the Labor Day indulgences.

Followed by a teeth cleaning…no cavities!

I spent the rest of the day trying to magically heal my ankle.  I’m hoping it’s just overuse.  I did a trail 20 mile race, a 20 mile long run, and a 10k race in 9 days….doh!

Amazingly, I didn’t miraculously heal overnight and had to skip my morning run with friends through Percy Warner Park.  :(

I decided I needed to spritz (or douse) myself with Good Vibes, lol!

I stopped my pity party and got my butt to Orange Theory Fitness.  I did the spin bike in lieu of the treadmill and had a great workout.

Charlotte had another post-surgery follow-up appointment and this one went really well!

4 Winners were selected in the Coach’s Oats Giveaway!  Congrats to @emishmosh, @endurancefiend, @michaelahackett95, and @elawrence67

P.S.  I always LOVE it when you post pictures of my recipes.  Your version is almost always prettier than mine!!  @faygsm made my Southwestern Quinoa Salad and it’s ‘almost’ too pretty to eat!  Y’all checkout her blog at!!

Do you struggle with taking rest days or do you enjoy them?  Obviously a big YES for me!

Do you prefer 10k/5k races or longer races? Why?  I feel like I get to enjoy longer races, whereas the short fast ones just make me want to puke!

Have you tried the Dark Chocolate Almonds from Trader Joe’s?  Oh my gosh…they’re SO good!!! Dark Chocolate + Almonds = health food, right?

ahhhhh I rock the rest days BUT BUT BUT it took me almost four decades to get here :-) so theres that?

    • JenChoosesJoy

I’m definitely a work in progress!

  • Heather Davis

I’m so jealous you have a Trader Joes. My oldest son works at the one in Atlanta and you would think he would be sending some love this way, but NO. Funny thing my other son works at Whole Foods in Atlanta. If I moved back to Atlanta I would have the hook up. I have a love/hate relationship with rest days!!!! Have a great day.

    • JenChoosesJoy

Oh my gosh!! I’d be packing up and moving to Atlanta, lol!

I secretly (no, it’s actually widely known) LOVE rest days. Planned rest days, at least. If I find myself unable to do my workout (poor scheduling, injury, etc.) then I become quite the crankypants.
I’m starting to think I may prefer longer races, but so far I’ve only *done* 5 or 10s. My first half is coming up, and I’m enjoying the training and trying to hang for the long haul, instead of worrying about speed as much.
No Trader Joe’s where we live, but daaaaaaang, those look good. I’ll just eat my roasted chick peas that I brought for a snack today and feel a little sorry for myself that they’re not crazy delicious looking dark chocolate almonds!

    • JenChoosesJoy

Enjoy your first half….finishing is an incredible feeling!!

  • Lynn B

I have made a few of your recipes so far and I love them. I have a few others I cannot wait to try as well! I hope your Achilles heals quickly and you are back running soon! PS I love rest days:)

    • JenChoosesJoy

It’s feeling a lot better today and I was able to do some slow miles!

  • Sarah @ SarahRuns26

I don’t struggle with rest days. I think part of it is that I can’t fit running into my schedule everyday without sacrificing sleep, so some days I just run out of time!

I don’t even remember the last shorter race I did. I have a 5k coming up in a few weeks, so that should be interesting!

I need to try those almonds! The last dark chocolate almonds I got weren’t great. The chocolate to nut ratio was way too high!

Hope your Achilles starts to feel better soon!!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      They are SO good!!!!
      And, thank you!

  • bubblyrunner

Sorry to hear about your achilles….that stinks. Hopefully you heal soon! I definitely prefer longer races–I’m a ‘slow to warm up’ runner. And those almonds look amazing! I love the regular dark chocolate almonds, but I can’t buy a container of them because they’re gone in like two days! Ooops!

    • JenChoosesJoy

I’m the exact same way!! It takes me forever to get warmed up.

  • cheryl

I have learned to like the rest days–mostly the extra time in the schedule!!

    • JenChoosesJoy

I need to embrace your attitude!!!!

  • AmandaM

I much prefer longer races. Halfs (halves?) are my favorite. I do like to cross train (elliptical, stair master while reading my book) so I don’t have a huge issue with taking run rest days. A complete rest day is VERY hard for me :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

That’s a great point! It’s a lot easier to embrace a cross training day over a complete rest day.

  • Angie @ Pace with Grace Blog

I hope you heal soon! I enjoy rest days most of the time but sometimes I am itching to get out there!
I prefer longer races but like to use shorter races as training. I am more of a fan of the 10k than the 5k.
I have not tried the TJ dark chocolate almonds but I think I need to! I would say they are healthy-ish 😉

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Healthy-ish, lol!!

  • Suzy Slane

I like longer races too. The shorter ones are vomitrocious! I hope your achilles shapes up asap. There is NO ROOM in our lives for injuries. Rawr.

    • JenChoosesJoy

‘Vomitrocious’….Ah-mazing and it describes my feelings towards the 5k perfectly!!!

  • Faygie Moorvitch

Aww, thanks for posting my picture :)

    Hope your achilles heals quickly!!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Thank YOU!

  • corrie

Charlotte’s little face in the backseat is too cute!! I am so glad she had a great vet appt.! And I am even more glad that you are back to running and feeling better!! :)

  • Jamie Whittendale

I’m so bad at taking rest days. I feel totally out of sorts when I don’t start my day off with a run! And I love longer races – they’re much more enjoyable for me. Shorter the race, I feel like no sooner do I start I’m done! I hope your achilles starts feeling better soon!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Thank you!!!!

  • Axel Kussmann

My lower back has been stiff and locking up, so it’s forced me to take it easy… my Achilles has often kept me from running my best.

    • JenChoosesJoy

This is my second time with an achilles problem. Hopefully it won’t be a recurring problem. I hope your extra rest helps your back!!!!!

  • Dejah Tunney

So I’m not sure what I did, but I can never see your new blog posts on my computer! The most recent one is 7/27. But they always show up on my phone. So strange! Oh by the way, I have been reading for about a month now. You’re so motivating and I love your YouTube videos! :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

Strangely, someone else had a similar problem seeing new posts on their computer. To solve the problem, they went to my homepage and clicked the blog button at the top of the page. Then they could see the latest post. Maybe that will help. Also, you if you subscribe via email, the latest blog will be sent to your email each morning. :)

Rest days…. I love the idea of them the day before then on rest day I’m bummed and would rather be running. What cross training areas do you focus on when you strength train? I used to love the 5K because it was short and sweet, but now I am liking this half marathon training. It’s not as quick but it takes a lot out of me, which I need lol. Next time I’m in town I will check this dark chocolate almonds out!

    • JenChoosesJoy

I ride the spin bike, lift free-weights, and love TRX on cross training days! :)

  • Shannon Chenoweth

Yicks to injuries! Hope your Achilles heal up asap! Your dog is sooo adorable! :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

Thank you and she is pretty awesome!

  • Alaina @ The Simple Peach

You need to slow your little tush down! Sending good vibes your way for a speedy recovery. Those almonds = trouble. They are sooo good!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Thank you!!!!

  • Laura Olinger

Being injured is so disappointing and I’m a frequent host of the pity party in those circumstances. I hope you’re well on your way to recovering! Also glad to hear your pup is doing well, too!

  • Amanda B @ Cupcakes and Miles

I love milk chocolate almonds, but I’ll have to grab TJ’s dark chocolate ones. Sounds pretty good! :)
