“How I Run” Q&A

I was tagged by Ivanna at Petite Heartbeat to answer some running related questions.  You can read her answers HERE!

1.  Would you rather run along a beach path or mountain trail?

The beach is obviously my happy place to run!

2.  If you could choose the flavor of Gatorade at your next race’s aid stations, what would it be?

Lemon-lime is my favorite flavor and if it’s up to me, the race would have Cocogo on the course! (Discount code: JENCHOOSESJOY)

3.  If I gave you a $100 gift card to a running store, what would you purchase with it?

I’m in the process of trying out new-to-me shoes.  Next up is the Mizuno Sayonara 3!

4.  Do you prefer to follow a training plan or wake up and then decide how far and how fast you want to run?

I love my training plans made by Coach Mark Hadley at Maximum Performance Running!  He takes all of the thought out of training by providing distance, pace, and instructions.

5.  Would you rather start your run with the uphill and end on the downhill or start your run with the downhill and end with the uphill?

I’d start with the uphill and have a fast downhill finish!

6.  When you can’t run, what type of cross-training do you choose to do?

I love OrangeTheory Fitness.  If I don’t want to run on the treadmill, they have spin bikes for the cardio segment.  Plus they incorporate TRX, free weights, BOSU, etc…

7.  What is your preference—>out and back, point to point, or loop runs?

Point to point, but I rarely get to do it because….how would I get home.

8.  If you could recommend ANY running related item to a new runner it would be…?

I would send them to Fleet Feet to get properly fitted for running shoes.
Fleet Feet

9.  Do you see any wild animals while out on your runs?

We get to see lots of deer, turtles, squirrels, and chipmunks in TN.  Oh, and I love seeing owls in Percy Warner Park!

10.  Ever gotten lost while out on a run?

Yes!  Whenever I travel, I explore the new city with a runabout.  I always carry my phone so I can find my way back to the hotel.

11.  If you could have one meal waiting and ready for you each time you got home from a  run for the next 30 days…what would it be?

Acai or Pitaya Bowls!!  The next 30 days will be roasting hot in TN and these bowls hit the spot!

12.  Capris or shorts?  What do yo urun in most?

Shorts!  I especially love the Oiselle Mac Rogas.

13.  At what mile (or how many minutes) into your run does your body start to feel like it is warming up and ready to go?

It takes me a while to warm-up.  I start to feel good about 3 miles into my run.

14.  What do you do with your key when you run?

I put my key in my Amphipod pocket.

15.  If you could relive any race that you have done in the past, which one?

I would run the North Fork 50 with Corrie again!

16.  What type of run is your least favorite?

Tempo runs.  They always feel so hard for me.

17.  When you go for a run, do you leave from your front door or drive somewhere to start?

I usually drive, because I’m meeting friends!

18.  When running in daylight, are sunglasses a must or an annoyance?

Ughhh…annoyance.  I recently bought running sunglasses.  I know I should wear them, but I don’t like how they feel.

19.  When you get tired, what keeps you from quitting?

My tribe!!! These incredible friends give me strength.

Beach path or Mountain trail?

Fave Gatorade flavor?

Where do you store your key when you run?

What’s your least favorite type of run?

Well I can’t answer any of these then because I’ll be doing my own post about it! 😉 But I HAVE to run in sunglasses. I hate squinting!

      Can’t wait to read yours!

Love the post, thanks for sharing!!
Beach for sure! But the mountains in the fall would be nice too. Lemon-Lime lover here too. If I have keys, they’re in my Nathan handheld. I don’t know what it is about pockets in running shorts, but they are too small to fit anything!! Definitely Tempo runs, I don’t feel like I get into a good rhythm, which of course is the goal so that it pushes you.

Tempos are definitely great for training!!!

  • gbena

i’ve never run on a beach yet and i love trails but i’m a freak about snakes and bugs so i tend to avoid trails. :( do not like gatorade, tears up my stomach. key is in my fuel belt or back zipper pocket. tempo always seems very hard for me. and i have to totally agree about sunglasses, i cannot wear them at all they bug me. Happy Thursday Joy! We are almost there, FRI-YAY!

      Have a great day!!!

  • http://gretchruns.com Gretchen Braun

I would run on either beach or mountain! Mountain probably has more shade so I guess I would pick that!
I think I’m the only person who runs with my keys in my hand..otherwise I get nervous that I’ll drop them!
I have to agree with you and say tempo is my least favorite. I ran one today and it was SO tough! WHY!?

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I feel like I never get into a groove with tempos. I just stay uncomfortable!

I love spending time at the beach, but I think I prefer running in the mountains. Running on sand is hard! I’m headed on a road trip to Asheville-Atlanta-Chattanooga, so I think I’ll get plenty of trails. This was a fun post, thanks for sharing!

Mountain run–I can only think about shade! Least favorite type of run–the day after a long run (shake out)! I do not like Gatorade, any color.

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I didn’t even think about shake out runs. They’re always tough with heavy slow legs!

I enjoyed reading your response and look forward to answering them too :-)
Your acai bowls are a work of art!

I have a super sweet friend who has helped me move, drove me to the airport, etc. But the best was that he would let me run someplace (sometimes the beach) and drive me back to my car…miss that guy!

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

      That IS a great friend!!

  • squib

Mountain trail, for sure! I usually don’t have to store my key because I run from home, but when I do a race, I usually pin it inside my sports bra because I’m classy like that.

And you’ve gotten me hooked on Cocogo, but otherwise I prefer the unnatural blue Powerade.

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I love it when we describe the flavor with a color name…lol! I did it last week when asked about what flavor nuun was in the cooler, I said pink!

Thanks for the tag…I’m going to put a few comments here first…. I’m surprised to see that it takes you 3 miles to warm up…that’s how long it takes me and your monthly mileage totals are usually 2.5 – 3 times mine, so I guess I should expect for it to continue to always take me that long to really warm up…. The BEACH obviously favorite place to run…. and I recently saw an Orange Theory Fitness studio in LA but it’s a little far from me… I hope they open one closer to me because I really want to try it! And I’d buy shoes too….I’m a shoe girl….whether stilettos or running shoes, I want them all!

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I’ve always been a slow starter. I get stronger the longer I run.

  • AmandaM

Thank you!! Reading that it ALSO takes you 3 miles to warm up makes me feel better about myself given you are a super runner :)

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I’m definitely a slow starter. At least it makes for negative splits!

      • AmandaM

I like that! Good point. Ha.

thanks for the tag! :) fun survey. sunglasses used to annoy the crap out of me.. until i bought a nice pair of sporty oakleys. now i can’t live without them!

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I need to suck it up and learn to run in sunglasses.

  • http://ultrafootpath.blogspot.com/ Melissa

That was a fun read, thanks for sharing! It takes me a good 2.5-3 miles to warm up :)
    -Mountain trail
-No Gatorade, NUUN tabs all the way!
-I store my keys in the pocket of my hand held or my faux fanny pack. ( but the additional water has been coming with me on all my runs thanks to this humidity!)

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

With the heat, I’ve been taking a handheld out on every run!

  • http://www.runningnreading.com Running ‘N’ Reading

Woo hoo! Thanks for tagging me, Jen!! These are always so much fun. If I hook up my internet properly in the new house, I should be able to post it soon – ha! A couple of weeks ago, I left home early for a weekday (shorter) run and didn’t take a water bottle; I got to the trail and realized that I had on a completely seamless outfit (no pockets anywhere) and I had to resort to the ol’ key-in-the-bra trick. Luckily, I had the removable pads in my sports bra or it may have fallen out – hahaha! Hope you’re having a great day!

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

No rush!! You have a lot going on!

  • corrie

This was so fun! And I totally agree on the moment I would relive :) Love you friend!
