I Finally Had a Good Russian!

I had a bit of a bumpy start to my Monday…computer issues…blah, blah, blah…

When in doubt, run it out!  Running with friends makes everything better.  We met up at 5:30am and it was the first run in months that required a headlamp.

I ran 6 miles with the group and 3 more solo.

We received a large information packet for this weekends Cumberland Plateau Stage Race (Click to read my race report from last year!).  It’s a doozy of a trail race.  It kicked my butt last year and I fully expect another arse whooping’ this year!  (Also, most of us got lost at least once last year.  I can’t understand why, lol!)

My hilarious girlfriend Shannon is also running the race and posted this on her Facebook page asking “if this is a map to One-Eyed Willy’s treasure?”

After a frustrating day with my new computer, I wasn’t really in the mood to cook.  My Veggie Chef to the rescue!  Y’all they don’t pay me, I just love keeping a few of their meals in my freezer.

They’re vegan, everything is pre-measured, and you just follow the directions.  Bhindi and Pea Masala with Basmati Rice

I made sure to lay everything out for track the night before.  Thank goodness I did, because I totally forgot to set my alarm! Picky Bar, GU, Cocogo (Discount code: JENCHOOSESJOY all caps)

Luckily, I’m naturally an early riser.  I darted out the door and even made it to the track a little early.

Workout: The Russian

3 x

(3x300m with 100m recovery) Goal: 1:06 Actual: 1:04, 1:06, 1:06, 1:06, 1:05, 1:06, 1:06, 1:07, 1:03)
800m recovery in between each set

Cool Down

We run the Russian a few times a year and I finally had a good Russian!  I give credit to the beautiful cool weather…upper 50’s…in August…in TN…crazy!

We celebrated with smoothies from the Juice Bar afterwards!

I had an acai bowl for lunch.

And, got a haircut!!!  It’s always fun when my stylist straightens my hair!

In honor of Taco Tuesday…

I had dinner at Baja Burrito!

In case you missed it, I posted my 2nd YouTube video!

Speed workout this week?

Please tell me there are some Goonie’s fans reading this?!  What were some of you favorite movies growing up?  I loved Labyrinth, Never Ending Story, Big

Have you ever gotten lost in a race?  How many extra miles did you run?  I got lost in at the Cumberland Plateau Stage Race last year and ran an extra 2 miles…doh!

I have a fear of getting lost in a trail race. Hasn’t happened yet, but I’m sure it will! I LOVE the Goonies! Did you hear that the lady that owns the house has closed it to the public now because of people being disrespectful of her property? I’ve been there before and its really cool, so its sad that it’s closed now. But I totally see why she did it!

    • JenChoosesJoy

Oh my gosh!! Stop it. You got to go in the Goonies house?!!! So cool!!!

  • Melissa

    Happy Wednesday to you!
-My speed workout is Friday, should be a good one :) lol We are having WAY cooler weather in MI too, but I need that sunrise a bit earlier! Cold and dark, is this Fall or end of August?!
-The Princess Bride, Turner and Hooch :)
-I’ve never been lost, but that fear is real!

    • JenChoosesJoy

This time last year it was way hotter!
I totally forgot about the Princess Bride…love it!!!

  • Jamie Whittendale

Love the haircut!! I got lost during a 5K and ended up running a little over 4 miles… needless to say it wasn’t my fastest race haha. Happy Wednesday!!!

    • JenChoosesJoy

Oh my gosh, I would be so frustrated if I got lost in a 5k! You’re already running at such a fast pace. I would have enough energy to keep it up any longer.

  • Rae

I have never gotten lost but don’t run that many races anymore. What kind of headlamp do you use? I am currently wearing one and it hurts my head. .just curious if you have any suggestions?

    • JenChoosesJoy

I wear a black diamond and love it!

  • Angie @ Pace with Grace Blog

Love your plaid top!! Looks greats on you!
I love ALL those movies too!! Brings back some great childhood memories!
Nice track workout! No speed work for me this week- my stomach is still not 100% so taking it easy with my runs for now.
That race map looks crazy. Good luck!

    • JenChoosesJoy

You’re smart to take it easy and rest up!! You’ll be feeling 100% in no time! ????

my speed workouts were 6 x 1.5 w/ 800 recover. i hope i don’t jinx myself but as of yet i have not gotten lost in a race but i am getting ready to do Ragnar, Chatt to Nashville in October and i’ve heard a few people got lost on the finishing leg last year (and that’s my leg). :( so now i’m freaking out. it would be awesome if we could meet up in Nashville for food after i finish! i do have a question about picky bars, when do you eat them, before you run, during or after? Its WEDNESDAY! Thank goodness!!!

    • JenChoosesJoy

That Ragnar route is hilly!!! I have a bunch of friends running it, but I have t done it yet.
Picky Bars: I eat mine before my runs. If it’s a super long trail run, I’ll eat one at an aide station mid race.

  • Richelle Winston

The Goonies….. Where do I begin, love that movie. I was a little tomboy so any movie involving kids and sports I was watching. Little Big league, The Sandlot, Little Green Giants….. Oh and of course The Lost Boys.

Never gotten lost but then again never did anything more than a 10k lol.

As for speed I’m just trying to make it through these 45+ min runs!

    • JenChoosesJoy

Yes!!! You’re building distance. No need to worry about speed right now. Just keep rocking your mileage!!

  • elawruns

Upper 50’s in August?? No way!! I’m so jealous. We are slightly cooler in TX…upper 70’s early in the morning.
I finally had a decent speed workout. 3×800 (75 sec rest) 6×400 (30-45 sec rest)
I might have no idea where I am during a trail race, but I’ve never been lost. I always make sure I can see someone because I am very bad with directions and get lost very easily. In shorter races, I’ve been mislead by the lead bike a few times. Not fun. My last 10k was actually 6.5 miles.
Veggie Chef looks so good. Also, I need Juice Bar near me!!! Dying to try the Choco Banana :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

Ooo…I really like your track workout!! I need to try it!

  • Suzy Hutchins

Cute hair cut!!! And amazing splits at the track. That’s awesome.

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Thanks so much!!!!

  • Jenny K

Labyrinth!!!! Ahh we are totally kindred spirits!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Love it!!!

  • Jenny K

    p.s. Excellent speed work!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      P.s. Thank you!!!!

  • bubblyrunner

I did 400m repeats this morning! I love them, they kick my butt in the best way. I LOVED Sandlot–such a classic!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      I always love 400m repeats!!!!

  • corrie

It will be a miracle if I don’t end up behind that waterfall at CPSR on Friday 😉
I LOVE Never Ending Story!! And your hair looks so cute! :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

When I was little I thought my dog was the luck dragon. ????

  • Running ‘N’ Reading

Jen, I LOVE this map – hahaha!! Oh, my gosh; y’all are going to have so much fun!! Let’s see…I had a tempo run yesterday, so that was my speed work (although not nearly as exciting as the lightning run – ha!), and the weather was fantastic. I’ve yet to get lost in a race, but it’s only a matter of time since I have no sense of direction. I LOVE GOONIES!! Hope you’re having an awesome day!

    • JenChoosesJoy

Tempo runs are always my toughest workout…great job!!!

  • Kamden03

Girl Labyrinth was my absolute favorite movie growing up! I had a huge crush on David Bowie …lol

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Me too!!!

  • Emily Walters

The Goonies are the best! Your hair looks super cute! As a curly headed gal myself, I love when my stylist straightens my hair. No speed workouts this week. I’m intimidated by track workouts! I’m hoping to connect with a track crew some time soon…but haven’t been brave enough to take the leap just yet!

    • JenChoosesJoy

I had never run on a track until about two years ago. Our track group was so helpful and thought me a ton. Now I love it!!!

      • Emily Walters

This might be the wrong forum to ask this question…but when do you start doing speed workouts? I’ve been running for years, but have just gotten back into it seriously in the past few months. I jumped in and went too hard too fast and wound up with terrible shin splints. I’m not trying to carefully build up my base mileage and really want to start doing speed work to hopefully actually get faster, but I’m not sure when to start putting them into my weekly routines…or exactly what to do when I do them. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

        • JenChoosesJoy

There are a couple of different types of speed workouts: track, fartlek, tempo, progressive, fast finish, etc…. You can google them and find some great workouts online. I searched track for beginners and found some great tips when I first started. To avoid injuries, I would only do one speed workout a week and make sure the rest of your runs are easy paced. I learned that slowing down my efforts for every run except track day actually made me faster. I like to do my speed work on Tuesdays. It gives my body plenty of time to heal before my Saturday long run. Hope this helps!

          • Emily Walters

            Super helpful! Thanks, Jen!

  • Amanda B @ Cupcakes and Miles

I’ve got speedwork scheduled for tonight. Fun! 😉

I have actually never seen the Goonies. Growing up though, I loved Pretty Woman, Babysitter’s Club, Troop Beverly Hills, Valley Girl, and the Secret Garden.

  • Carl Wright

Looks like a fun group Jen. I sometimes get lost in the woods on my training runs. (have a cell phone, but no media on it for GPS etc) In the races themselves, I have been good! :)
    Thanks for sharing!
