It’s My Blogiversary!

Holy Guacamole…JenChoosesJoy is 1!!!

This year has flown by.  When I started blogging last August, I thought I’d post twice a week and I had the goal of making it to January 1, 2015.  It quickly grew beyond those goals!

Fun Facts from my 1st year:

Number of posts: 338

I write each post at night before I go to bed. I post it to social media the following morning before I leave for my run.

Mail Chimp sends out a daily blog email at 7am CST. Make sure you subscribe!

I post 6 times a week.  (Sunday is a day of rest)

Most popular post: It was my Boston Marathon Race Report until we launched the new site with a Garmin Giveaway…lol!

Most popular recipe: Cauliflower Crust Cheese Sticks

Number of races: 10

Story behind the name: I almost called my blog Southern Jen.  When I left my job in the music business, I wasn’t really sure what to do with my newfound free time.  So, I put a daily calendar reminder to CHOOSE JOY.  I wanted to  consciously remind myself to build a new life that was joyful.  That daily reminder is still on my google calendar and when it came time to name my blog it only made sense to ditch Southern Jen and go with Jen Chooses Joy!

There is no better reminder and accountability to Choose Joy than writing a daily blog about it!

10 Reasons I Blog (and you should, too!):

  1. It’s an excellent way to channel my energy and creativity.
  2. It makes me chronical my life.  Believe it or not, I was the worst about taking pictures.  JCJ has become my journal of life, recipes, friendships, races, and whatever silly nonsense I get into.
  3. I get to share my passions for running, food, products, and travel.
  4. I’ve learned to use techonology…ish.  If you know me, it’s a Christmas miracle that a blog goes out every day.  Computers, apps, editing, etc…are not my strengths…at all.  I have even learned to type a little code.  Crazy!
  5. I used to read a few blogs, but since I started blogging I have discovered so many awesome blogs and bloggers!
  6. Blogging makes me come from a place of ‘YES‘.  If I sit at home (not that I would), there’s nothing to write about.  I don’t want to write about being a sloth on the sofa and you don’t want to read about it!  I’m more likely to say yes and try new restaurants, races, travel destinations, and recipes.
  7. Blogging encourages me to live intentionally.  Writing about my life forces me to face the good and the bad.  I try to learn from my mistakes and proactively set goals to better myself.
  8. I get to partner with awesome companies for GIVEAWAYS (my favorite!) and pass along discounts for products that I love.
  9. I’ve made so many wonderful friends…some I know in person and some through the web.  Either way, the kind words of encouragement are incredibly uplifting and I am beyond grateful.
  10. I LOVE it when readers stop me to say hello or yell Jen Chooses Joy when they pass me!  It still catches me off guard.  I forget that anyone actually reads this thing.  I am always humbled and full of gratitude…THANK YOU!

What’s next?

  • I’m starting a YouTube Channel!  I thought it would be a fun way to do some Q&A for frequently asked questions.
  • Hopefully I’ll have some Choose Joy shirts for sale soon!  I’m going to donate 100% of the profits to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
  • And, I’m going to continue posting!

Bloggers: Did you almost name your blog something different?

How long have you been blogging and how often do you post?

Does anyone still keep a handwritten journal?

#choosejoy and THANK YOU for a wonderful first year!

Happy blogiversary! <3! I love the blog name you ended up choosing! 😀 I used to keep a handwritten journal, but since the start of med school, I've just been exclusively blogging because I type a whole lot faster than I write, haha.

    • JenChoosesJoy

I’m amazed you still have time to blog…so impressive!

  • Lucie Palka

Hi and Happy Blogiversary! I believe mine is in August too, so I’m probably at 1 year as well (I’ve been vacationing so I forgot about it)! I would say that I blog for about the same reasons you do. It’s a creative channel and I find that putting my goals down for everyone to see encourages me to follow through!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Thank you!!!

  • fitlivingblog

Happy 1 year blogiversary! I have been blogging for a little over a year, but didn’t really get serious about it until a few months ago. There are so many things I love about blogging, but I especially love the relationships and networking with other bloggers! I currently aim to post 2 – 3 times per week, as I also have a full-time job, so time is a little scarce these days. Working on moving to blogging full-time in the future!

    • JenChoosesJoy

That’s such an awesome and exciting goal!!

  • Jill Aldred

So exciting!! I look forward to seeing your IG posts daily, and your blog is a delight to read! Happy 1 year!!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Thank you!!!

  • Sarah @ SarahRuns26

I did choose something different (KS Runner) and then switched, which was stressful but I think worth it in the end! I’m glad you started blogging because I love reading yours everyday! I blog about 3 days a week, which is about all I can handle! I know blogging forces me to say yes to things that I might usually say no to just because I end up thinking, man, no one wants to read that I read and watched tv this weekend (even though some of that happens too!). Happy 1st birthday! Looking forward to many more! :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

I totally forgot that you had changed your name. It feels like you’ve always had the new name…love it!

  • Lynn B

Your blog is one of my favorites. I love your positive attitude. I look forward to reading it each morning. And your passion

What site did you use to start your blog? I’m currently relaunching my running blog and am curious what service people like most !

    • JenChoosesJoy

      I started with WordPress!

  • Katie West

Happy day to you! I found your blog after that rainy day in Boston. I finished w/in a minute of you so it was fun to read your recap. That day was cold and hard but of course it was full of joy! I love your blog and wish you the best!

Thats so cool! Fingers crossed we’ll have better weather next year!!

I have been blogging for just over 2 years!!!…I should have done a 2 year anniversary! I usually post several times a week, but I have had a few crazy weeks this summer with traveling.

I love blogging for all the reasons you do! I am also terrible with technology and I have no idea what I am doing half the time :).

The idea of a shirt to support St Jude is AMAZING!!!! I would totally buy it!

    • JenChoosesJoy

Fingers crossed I’ll make it two years!!

  • Angie @ Pace with Grace Blog

Happy blogiversary! How exciting! As a daily reader, I can say I love reading your blog and your joy for life is contagious! I love your reasons for blogging and can relate to many of them. The name for my blog, my sister helped me come up with and when she said it, I was like, that’s it!! I have been blogging since April of this year. Its great to see all your success in your first year and I look forward to continuing to read :-)

  • Katherine @ Sweet. Southern. R

Congratulations and happy birthday! I had a hard time coming up with my blog name. Sweet Southern Run is a combination of all the things I love so once it hit me I knew it was a good fit! I’ve only been blogging for about a month, but your reason #6 for why you blog, about coming from a place of ‘yes’ definitely resonates! It makes me take action and choose to do things and experience things as opposed to sitting on the couch at home! Hope you have a happy blogaversary!!

    • JenChoosesJoy

Choosing a name felt like such a big commitment. I LOVE your name!!

  • Meredth @ ImRunningWithErasers

Happy Birthday to your blog! I haven’t been blogging super long, but I’ve learned a lot and I am loving it! I wanted to find a way to blend my passions of running and teaching, so Running With Erasers was born! Enjoy your Blogger Birthday :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Your name ROCKS!

  • GiGi Eats Celebrities

    Yay!! Happy ONE YEAR 😀

    • JenChoosesJoy

  • Jennifer Bruce

Happy blogiversary! I’ve been flip flopping back and forth about starting a blog, but am a little intimidated by the idea of it. I also can’t think of a name! I’m so happy I stumbled upon your blog :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

Thank you so much. If you start blogging let me know so I can read it!

  • Ash @ The Nashvillian

Happy blogiversary!!! I didn’t know you used to work in the music industry! I’m working in artist management right now….

    • JenChoosesJoy

Its such a small world! I worked at Curb as their Creative Direct. :)

  • Running ‘N’ Reading

YAY!!! I’m so proud of you, Jen!! I love the story about how you chose the name for the blog; that is such a great message, and I thank you for sharing your joy with us every day. Here’s to another year of running, fun and lots of shenanigans!!

    • Jenny

      I agree, Tara!

    • JenChoosesJoy

I can’t say enough thank you’s for all of your support and encouragement!!!

  • Rachel

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Thank you!!!

  • AmandaM

I will definitely be getting a shirt!!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Woohoo…thank you!!!

  • Rachel Denler

I love your attitude and your “sparkle”. I’ve been dreaming of starting a blog for several years. I’d love to get started, especially as I have a big year ahead of me. You’re inspiring me to step out there- I’m also not super “tech savvy” but you can really teach yourself anything! Happy blogiversary!

    • JenChoosesJoy

Go for it!!! If I can do this, you definitely can!!! :)

You have accomplished a lot in one year!!! Congrats! I started on Jan 13, and I have to say I completely agree with blogging makes you come from a place of YES. When I’m on the fence about pushing myself or trying something new, I think about how the new experience will help add to my blog so I can share the information… I post once a week…that takes enough time as is. Looking forward to what year 2 has in store for you.

    • JenChoosesJoy

Blogging has definitely brought so many fun experiences into my life! Thank you!! :)

  • Bonnie Stonebraker Davis

Congrats Jen! I love your blog. Confession time. I have more than once considered not following you here on FB, or IG, because I have a very jealous envious side, and your life seems pretty great! But I know you don’t share to make people jealous, you share to inform and inspire and I fight those nasty jealous feelings and just enjoy your joy! I’m also inspired and entertained as well. You’re helping me overcome my silliness in a way, so I thank you. And I thank you for the Caprese Quinoa recipe. Which I crave! Also, thanks for being one the first to always like my 80 trillion cat photos on IG! Lol

    • JenChoosesJoy

Social media can be so tricky. I do my best to “keep it real” but I think we inevitably share our daily highlights. I have definitely been jealous of someone’s abs or vacation. Anyways, I’m so glad you’re still with me! And, I’m a total sucker for cute pet photos!!!

  • Jason Chaffin

Happy Blogiversary! It’s been so fun to follow your journey online this last year! I’m so happy others can experience the kindness & joy you bring to this world!

    • JenChoosesJoy

You’re the best. You’re my one. Love you!!

  • Jenny

Woohoo!!!!!!!!!!! ONE YEAR <3 Love the story behind the blog and the reasons to start one. I've literally been toying with ideas for over a year, and have been wanting to pick your brain Jen! Thanks for always inspiring me! Now for champs and rose! bring on the celebration… best first birthday ever. lol.

    • JenChoosesJoy

Feel free to send me an email through the contact me section. I’m here to help! And, thank you SO much!!!

      Thank you SO much!!!

  • mkeys724

Congratulations! I have loved watching your blog grow over the last year!

    • JenChoosesJoy

Heartfelt thanks for all of your encouragement!!

  • Amanda B @ Cupcakes and Miles

    Ah! How exciting! Happy Blogiversary!!!

I always love reading your blog and look forward to your new posts!

I went through a ton of names before I settled on Cupcakes and Miles.

I try to post every weekday with a weekend recap every Sunday evening.

And yes, I’m old fashioned and do keep a notebook handy for notes (not so much journaling).

    • JenChoosesJoy

That’s too funny…I jot my notes on notepads as well. I have them all over my house. Your blogging work ethic has definitely inspired me. Thank you!!!!

  • Faygie Moorvitch

    Happy Blogiversary!!

I’ve actually had a food blog (heavy on the baking) for years, but I’ve not been posting in it. To start with, my focus has changed so much (I became vegetarian in May 2014, I’ve been {mostly} eating much healthier, and these days running has taken priority. Also, I felt like a fraud, because while I LOVE to eat, I don’t necessarily love cooking (while I cook a lot, cooking is a means to an end for me. I do enjoy baking, but have cut way back on it). I’ve been thinking for ages of starting a new blog, more like yours – running, food, life. A little more casual than a full-on cooking blog. This post might be the push I need to finally get it started! (You can check out my old blog here, if you’re interested:

I’m looking forward to your Choose Joy shirts! :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

YES!!! Go for it! I do love the flexibility of my blog. I’m heading over to check out yours right now. And, thank you!!

      • Faygie Moorvitch

Okay, I’m in the middle of setting one up. I’m just using a free WordPress one for now, because I don’t trust myself to keep it up! 😉 I’ll let you know once I actually get something posted.

      • Faygie Moorvitch
  • Melissa

Congrats! I love reading your blog, you bring so much inspiration and such a positive attitude to the world…and JOY lots of JOY!
-I’ve been blogging since February. I love documenting my journey!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Thank you so much!!!

  • Alaina @ The Simple Peach

Wow! What a year?! I just celebrated one year too! It’s amazing how doing such a small thing everyday makes such a big difference in your life. Looking forward to reading more about your running and coffee adventures :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

That’s so well said!! My little blog has had a big impact on my life. Thank you!! :)

  • corrie

Happiest Blogiversary sweet friend!! I remember when we chatted about your ideas and dreams for this sweet, joyful blog over a year ago at track and now look!!! I am so proud of you and thank-you for sharing your life and fun with all of us fans :) I can’t wait to see what year two has in store for JCJ!!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      THANK YOU!!!

  • Meghan Matejka

Happy Blogiversary! I’ve been blogging since March and I tend to post 4-6 times a week. I love your reasons to blog. I have found so many more blogs through people commenting and looking at other people’s comments. I could seriously sit and read blogs all day!

    • JenChoosesJoy

Me too!! Reading blogs over a cup of coffee makes me so happy! :)

  • Yissel

I just started blogging a few months ago. I named it yizzylovestorun. I wanted to use it as a tool to keep me motivated while training for the NYC marathon. Also, maybe my experience could help someone else. I do have a handwritten journal. I use Lauren Fleshman’s Believe journal…Happy Blogiversary! Love reading your blog. Your energy is contagious :-)

    • JenChoosesJoy

I used the Believe journal to track my Boston training earlier this year…loved it!!!

  • stephanie g

Great post and happy blogiversary! I love your blog… found it through recognizing your daily comments on HungryRunnerGirl’s blog and now I’m reading yours daily, as well!

I love your reasons why you blog, especially the one about coming from a place of “yes.” This is a great reminder that life is in taking chances and trying new things, and those things are often in the moments when you say “yes” instead of “no.”

Can’t wait for the YouTube channel and shirts. :)

I do keep a handwritten journal in a daily planner, but I’ve been bad about keeping up with it this year. Need to get back to it!

    • JenChoosesJoy

I love HRG and I’m so glad you found my blog!!! Thank you!????

  • Reese Derrenberger

How inspiring! It’s amazing that you’ve acquired such an awesome readership in that short amount of time.
I recently got back into blogging, I hope I can be as successful as you when my blog hits 1. My blog wasn’t almost named something else, it was named something else, lol. I’ve actually had a few different blogs over the years, but have decided to really commit to it this time around. I noticed I started putting in my online bios “I run. I write. I mom.” cause that’s what I do, every day. Then I had a light bulb moment and decided to name my blog that.

    • JenChoosesJoy

I think it’s pretty normal to change names along the way. I LOVE RunWriteMom!!!!

  • Laura Olinger

I love your reasons for blogging! I think my list would be pretty similar. I do sometimes still write for my own enjoyment, not for the blog. I think it’s important to keep some of my creativity for myself.
