NYC Recovery Week

First things first (I’m the realest)….my NYC Marathon Recap will be posted Monday morning.  Thanks for your patience!!!  During my race, I landed funny and hyperextended my knee.  So…here’s a look at my post-race recovery week:

Wednesday:  Not running = sass!

I went to the gym and did a little cross training for sanity’s sake.

I did a session at Select Cryotherapy.   3 minutes at -306 degrees!

I’m on the Rock n Blog Team for the Rock n Roll Marathon Series.  We’ve been doing a fun countdown to RnR Las Vegas.  Here’s my contribution:

I’ve been resting A LOT this week.  I think Charlotte likes the extra snuggles!

Thursday: I was SOOOOO excited to see my friends at BBC!

I wore this rad NYC tank from Nike!

I started out walking and ended up doing a 4 mile walk/jog interval.

Robin Frazier at Franklin Massage Center worked her magic on my legs.  As my knee heals, I’m realizing how sore the surrounding muscles and tendons are.

I treated myself to an acai bowl for lunch.  :)

That night, Fleet Feet hosted an awesome event with Another Mother Runner!

There was a great turnout!

For dinner I made a new Sweet Potato and Brussels Sprouts Wild Rice…SO GOOD….recipe coming soon.

Since I wasn’t running we started the day with a crepe date at The Perch!

Followed by some cross training at the gym in my New Balance special NYC edition Vazee!

I ended the day with ASTYM from Leah Sawyer.  It’s worked really well for me in the past.

HUGE THANKS to these ladies for rocking their CHOOSE JOY shirts and for supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital!  I will definitely have another shirt sale soon with the addition of sweatshirts!

And @gbena‘s daughter

Who’s running Las Vegas? I’ll be slowly running the half for fun and I’ll be at the We Run Social meetup!

Have you read the Another Mother Runner books?

Have you tried ASTYM or Graston to help with recovery?

I imagine those books would be great for a running mother and lots of my friends would enjoy them. They don’t interest me b/c I am not a mother and don’t intend on being one except maybe to a future puppy:)
Glad you are resting as I know that resting is the worst! It will be well worth the agony in order to be fresh for your next adventures.:)

    • JenChoosesJoy

I almost didn’t go because I’m not a mom, but it was hilarious for women runners in general!

  • Sue Tate

i went to the Another Mother Runner party here in the DC area last year, Sarah and Dimity are so awesome aren’t they? I’ve read all of their books, minus the new one. My chiropractor does Graston on my calves all of the time. It is sooo painful but works so well!! Hope to run into you in Vegas, but my flight leaves early Monday so won’t be at the We Run Social Meetup, I’m so bummed!

    • JenChoosesJoy

AMR put on such a fun event!!! Sorry you can’t stay for the Vegas meetup!

  • Amanda B @ Cupcakes and Miles

I think I tried out Graston at a race expo, and (whatever it was) definitely worked and I loved it! Now that Route 66 is just around the corner, I’m thinking I may go in for a full session.

I love that Nike tank! Very cool!

    • JenChoosesJoy

It’s really helped me recover and heal from races and injuries!

  • Tracy Elliott Evans

Never heard of ASTYM but I am in need of trying! Can’t get my own knee to recover from some very annoying ITBS :(. What’s up with your knee? Injuries suck! I’ve been so blessed to no t have any before and this is killing me. Curious what shoes you ran NYC in?? Also…. Had my first Acai Bowl the other day – OMG. YUMMMM!

    • JenChoosesJoy

Look for ASTYM or Graston in your area. They’re basically the same thing and they’ve worked wonders for me every time I’ve had an injury! I wore the Asics Cumulus 17 in NYC!
Oh….and welcome to the acai addiction!

    Best. Opening. Ever.

      Best. Shirt. Ever.

Have fun in Vegas! I have read the books and went to their event when they came by me and it was awesome, so inspirational!

    • JenChoosesJoy

It was such a fun night!

  • Margaret @youngandrungry

I love the perch! Massages help me so much with recovery and I’m not just saying that because of how much I love them. I haven’t read one of her books, but I imagine one day I will.

    • JenChoosesJoy

I’ve been getting massages every other week for about 6 months now and it’s worked wonders for me!

  • Laura Olinger

I LOVE Graston. I had it done while I was recovering from a bad knee strain. it allowed me to run while I was still healing. Although I know I would have healed faster had I not run at all, my sports chiro said I would be okay to run so of course I did! I hope your knee heals up faster than Dennis Kimetto can run a marathon!

    • JenChoosesJoy

I’m the exact same way!! I’m sure i”d heal faster if I rested, but I’m grateful that my pt is helping to run while I heal.

  • Pam Keenan

I have never tried ASTYM, but have started regular deep tissue massages for my legs and they really help. I waited until Wednesday after NYC marathon since I was still pretty sore Tuesday!

    • JenChoosesJoy

I get a deep tissue sports massage every other week and swear by it!

  • Pam Keenan

I have never tried ASTYM but have regular deep tissue sports massages that hurt like crazy but help so much. Hope you are mostly healed from NYC….this time I waited 3 days before my massage, I was super sore Monday and Tuesday.

    • JenChoosesJoy

I’m a huge believer in deep tissue sports massages, too!!

  • Yissel

I bought the New Balance NYC shoes too! Love them. Bummed I didn’t get to run into you in NY but hopefully one day soon at another race. If you ever do a Phoenix race, let me know. Sorry to hear about your knee. You still did awesome even with the injury, 4 minutes faster than me. I was trying for sub 4 but it was a tough course and my achilles area was a tiny bit cranky after half point. But I did have a huge PR from my previous best time. 19 minutes faster!…I have done the Astym before on my calf. It hurt a lot. I wanted to hurt my PT person ;-)but it did help..I am going to do Rock n Roll AZ half in January.

    • JenChoosesJoy

I’ve struggled with achilles trouble in the past and it’s tough….I’m sorry! That’s amazing that you still had such a big PR!!!!

  • MJruns

Hope your knee is better quickly! Not sure I’ve had ATSTYM – have had ART and trigger point massages (and do trigger point on myself,) and Graston and e-stim and ultrasound. All, plus the massages, have been very helpful. My chiro uses whatever I need at the time and I supplement it at home or with extra massages. Haven’t tried acupuncture yet. Tried dry needling once – it made things worse and caused an addiitional problem. Only thing I won’t do again.

    • JenChoosesJoy

ASTYM is very similar to Graston. I’ve never tried dry needling, but it scares me!

Love the amr books…the last one, Tales from AMR my favorite…and I listen to some of their podcasts, too.

    • JenChoosesJoy

I need to check out their podcasts!

  • Yissel

What size did you get in the Asics NYC racer back? I want to order one but there is only XS and M online right now and was wondering if they run small and the M would work.

    • JenChoosesJoy

I’m wearing a small, but it it’s long and loose on me.

      • Yissel

Thank you for the info on the shirt. I appreciate it :-)

  • Jess at Run Pink!

What a great week! As a mother runner I still haven’t read the book!! It’s on my bucket list of reads. And how cool is it that you’re a rock n blogger?! Totally jealous. But you are amazing! I really do like the race series but this last race was just a total bust. Hoping to rock Nashville again next year! Looking forward to your marathon recap!

  • Sheena

I love the NYC shoes! I hope your knee is feeling better with a little RNR.

  • Amy @

  • stephanie g

Sorry to hear about your knee- glad you are resting and getting healing help!
AMR has been a huge part of my running journey, since I started running the day after my younger daughter’s 2nd birthday when I realized I needed to do something for me, to give me more patience and energy for chasing after the two kiddos! Love AMR and have read all of the books. Podcasts are great, too!
    Have a great day!

    • JenChoosesJoy

I’ve heard a bunch of runners love their podcasts. I have to check them out!!!
