NYC Taper Week!

Monday:
IMG_3758.JPG

Nashville has felt like Seattle this week.  My runs have started and finished with rain and darkness.  These friends made it fun!!!!
IMG_3760.JPG

My new Brentwood Breakfast Club shirts arrived in the mail….LOVE!
IMG_3765.JPG

I caught up with friends over lunch.  Salad and we each ordered our own bowl of sweet potato fries….it’s not too soon to be  carbing-up for NYC, right?!
IMG_3761.JPG

With Charlotte being sick and race day nearing, I’ve been trying to stay busy while resting. (Does that even make sense?)  Anyways, I got my nails done.  It’s been months and now I feel like a real girl.
IMG_3762.JPG

Since I’m trying to be a girl, I did a face mask, too.  @healthydiva posted a pic of my favorite Boscia mask, so I needed to do one too.  This was my best attempt at smiling, because my mask had dried and my mouth couldn’t move!
IMG_3772.JPG

This week definitely has me feeling like a hot mess.  I’m trying my best to just embrace it.

Track Tuesday:

Prep: Defiance Fuel, Cocogo (discount code: JENCHOOSESJOY), Picky Bar

This was the radar…doh!
IMG_3768.JPG

Since it’s race week, my workout was:

5 easy-paced miles
3 at GMP (Goal: 8:10-8:20.  Actual: 8:11, 8:08, 8:05)
1 cool down

I was SOOO happy to have my friends on the track!!!!
IMG_3767.JPG

Even though I was soaked, I headed straight to Juice Bar for a Cocoa Banana smoothie!
IMG_3775.JPG

I went to Franklin Massage for a pre-race tune-up with Robin Frazier!
IMG_3770.JPG

Had an acai bowl for lunch.
IMG_3776.JPG

And of course, I couldn’t forget about Taco Tuesday!!!!
IMG_3769.JPG

With Jason gone and Charlotte at the vet, Caroline and I ended the night with a cup of hot chocolate in my CHOOSE JOY mug!!!

Do you do any track or speed work during race week?

Has it been raining where you live? Do you run outside or hop on the treadmill?

Do you get your nails done regularly?

I hope Charlotte gets to feeling better soon. So sad when our pups are not feeling well. Yes it has been raining in Atlanta. Our weather is pretty much like yours! Next week is my full on taper, but no speed work. Just a tempo run or two. I do not get my nails done, sad. But I do love that Boscia face mask. I try to do a mask once a week.

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

Charlotte is doing a lot better today….thank you!!!
Good luck with your taper time!

I rarely get my nails done! They need some serious tlc lol I do some light speed work like strides and a few miles at gmp but that’s about it. I’m excited to read about NYC! And a little jealous 😉 I’ve been a bit of a hot mess too lately… All part of the taper madness.

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

The taper struggle is real! Hang in there!!!

  • cheryl

I hope your pup is on the mend. I never get my nails done. I am tapering now too, and I am actually finding it hard to motivate myself to get out there–THe rain is coming here today, I will probably hop on the treadmill, I don’t like wet sneakers/feet.

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

Charlotte is doing a lot better….thank you!

    I love your questions today
    1. no speed work, but I might do a couple pick ups in my maintenance runs and strides at the end
    2. Yes, it’s the same here in Memphis, but I’m excited to be going home to Nashville tomorrow!
    3. I wish, but no maybe 3 times a year

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

A little leg turnover feels good doesn’t it?!
It looks like the Nashville weather is getting better for your trip!

  • Jeannette

I don’t do speed work yet, I am a beginner :) It has not been raining much here in MA but when it is raining I run in it. I raced a half marathon in the rain last year and didn’t run in the rain once, it was def an experience that I should have trained for. YES! I do my nails regularly. I am in the military so dressing in a man suit, boots, and my hair pulled back all the time, it’s the little reminders like my nails that make me feel feminine.

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I LOVE that found a small way to keep your femininity! Little things can make a big difference in how we feel.

  • Rachel Preusser

I did a speed workout during race week this last race a few weeks ago, I think it helped but I will never really know. I am so excited for you and NYC, looks like the weather is going to be better than last years which of course is great news. You are going to do so amazing, I wish you the best of luck and will be following along with you Sunday! I am curious (and I may be getting ahead of myself and your future blog posts) as to how long you’ll rest for post race and what your next race planned is 😉 Have an awesome day Jen! Thanks for all the wonderful information you provide to your readers, I am a fan of course :) !

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I have a crazy Fall race schedule! I definitely over-commited. I’ll be running the Las Vegas Half 2 weeks after NYC, then the Flying Monkey Marathon the next week, and the St. Jude Memphis Half the following week! I’m just doing them all for fun…definitely not racing or trying for a PR.
As for post-NYC running, I’m just going to listen to my body. Sometimes I’m back running the next day….sometimes I’m waiting a week.

It’s been raining here non stop! I’ve been on the treadmill when I really need to be on the trails or the road. I’m hoping it drys out quickly! I don’t get my nails done ever but I do them myself before a race. It’s my way to stay busy when tapering.

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

For some silly reason, I thought I’d feel better for my race if my nails were done. Too funny!

  • http://www.sarahruns26.com Sarah @ SarahRuns26

No track or speed work during race week for me. I just go with some easy paced miles to move my legs and then rest! You can totally pass some of that rain over to me. Rainy days are my favorite and it’s been so dry here that we need it desperately anyway! I almost never get my nails done. I think the last time i had them done was for my wedding!

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I go through phases with my nails. For some silly reason, I thought I’d feel better for my race if my nails were done! #logic!

  • Pam Keenan

No track work during race week, but a few runs include pick ups to keep the legs moving. I do run on the treadmill when it is raining, but have run outside in rain and snow so I can handle it on race day. So excited about NYCM. I’m starting my packing today!

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

Leg turnover feels good doesn’t it?!!
I’m doing laundry and packing right now….woohoo!!!!

  • Priscilla Bankston

Good morning! I did Tuesday ladders on the treadmill yesterday. That is awesome dedication to go in the rain. I’ve never been on a track before. Love your nail color Mod about you! I have ordered a box of the picky bars for pre-runs. 2 questions: I read in your blog somewhere that you only eat 1/2 the bar, how do you stop at just 1/2 the bar? They are so good that I eat the whole bar! I ordered them from Amazon Prime, I wondered where you ordered yours from?
p.s. I ordered the Nest Pumpkin Chai candle :)

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I had never run track until a few years ago and now I love it!!
Picky Bars are my favorite pre-run food! I just break off half the bar if I’m doing a shorter run. If it’s longer, I’ll eat the whole thing! I joined the Picky Club through the Picky Bar website and they’re delivered monthly to my house.
      Enjoy the candle!!!

      • Priscilla Bankston

Thanks for the info on that there is a Picky Club lol. I’ll look that up! You have brought so much Joy into my running by reading your blog that I ordered a Choose Joy tank!!!!

        • AmandaM

I’m in the Picky Club too! I brought that same flavor pictured to work for part of my lunch today :) Lauren Fleshman and Stephanie Bruce (co-creators of Picky Bars) are my two of my idols (well not really but i like them) and I really want to support their company!

I usually do really easy runs during a race week, but the day before I do some striders to keep my legs fresh. It’s raining today and might be tomorrow as well in Pittsburgh! I’ve actually never gotten my nails done before, but I did paint them this weekend!

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

A little leg turnover feels good doesn’t it?! You need to treat yourself to manicure sometime!

  • Jen@milesandblessings.com

It has been beautiful here in MD…but is supposed to rain all day today! I LOVE LOVE LOVE that baseball tee!!!!!!!

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I’ll bet you have beautiful fall weather!!!!

  • Whitney

I usually do easy miles race week, but aim for some middle miles of a run to be at MP. I am currently trying a new plan for a half marathon in 5 weeks that mixes a lot of speed work variations, so I’ve been on the treadmill way too much because all of the changing paces confuse me! Excited to get back outside when the rain stops. I go through phases where I always have a manicure, and then (like right now) my nails look terrible… this post may inspire me to go get them done haha!

    • Whitney

PS I love seeing that mug! 😉

      • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

        It makes me SOOOOO happy!!!

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

      • Whitney

I got one before Chicago too, no shame!

  • https://bubblyrunner.wordpress.com bubblyrunner

Ugh, it’s so nasty out in DC too! Luckily it was only misting this morning, so I was able to run outside. I don’t get my nails done regularly but wish I could! If I try and paint my own they look like a hot mess.

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

Me too! When I try to do my own it looks like a four year old did them!

  • http://www.momontherunsanity.com Paria@momontherunsanity.com

I just started getting my nails done (gel of course) again in the last month after a few years of not doing it (too much time/maintenance)…. but when I look at them it makes me happy so let’s see how long I maintain it….. so excited and jealous of everyone doing NYC…. super excited to see your pics from there…. hope you get in some shopping while there….running and non-running related shopping:)

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

Gel is the way to go, so it will last longer! I really hope to do some shopping in NYC, too!

  • Angie @ Pace with Grace Blog

I lay off the speed work during race week but do it every week leading up. It has been raining here too. I will sometimes risk it and head outside but if its already pouring I will go to the gym on the treadmill. I do my nails regularly. I love the clean, polished look and I enjoy doing it! Continued prayers for Charlotte. There is nothing easy about having a sick fur-baby. Hang in there!

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I’m impressed you’re able to do your own nails! I’ve tried and it looks like a 4 year old did them!

  • http://www.suzyhastheruns.com Suzy Slane

I wouldn’t do track work during race week, no. But everybody is different! I live 2 hours north of Seattle so I know ALL ABOUT THE RAIN. :/

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I always try to run a few race pace miles early in the race week. Your race pace is A LOT speedier than mine!

  • http://www.pawsandpavement.com/ Sheena

I’ve been adding speedwork back in and loving it. I also went to Body Pump yesterday to get in some strength training so today I’m a bit sore. I don’t think I would do speedwork during taper week just because it does leave me sore. Maybe because I don’t do it enough?

I don’t get my nails none regularly but it’s such a treat!

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

      I LOVE Body Pump!

  • Hannah

I’ve never done a race – currently training for my first marathon (the Austin Marathon on 2/14). The speed work seems like such a satisfying workout, but since I’m building as a runner, I’m trying to make my training all about logging the miles and time on my feet vs speed to avoid injury.

It rained last week. Here in Austin, TX, we were suppose to be hit pretty hard by Hurricane Patricia, but that turned out to be not too bad.

I switch between paint and Jamberry nail wraps for my nails!

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

Austin is one of my favorite cities!! I’ve always said that I could live there.
I’m so glad the storm wasn’t as bad as expected!

  • wendy bragaw

I rarely get my nails done, but I ALWAYS paint my nails before a race!
I like running in the rain. Strong winds or ice will send me to the treadmill.

  • http://laurainlou.wordpress.com Laura Olinger

The radar in Louisville looks a lot like Nashville. Today was my first race post-half marathon, and I opted for the treadmill in case my legs gave out. I didn’t want to be stuck miles from home in the down pour! At least we seem to be mostly finished with the rain. I hope the rest of your training stays dry!

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I usually opt for treadmill for the same reason when I’m returning from a race.
Hopefully the NY weather will be better!

  • Sue Tate

I actually don’t get my nails done because it never lasts!! If I get a manicure it has to be a gel one so it lasts longer, but those cost more to upkeep…It’s a no-win situation for me, lol. I did do a short track workout during race week, 3 x 400’s. Easy.

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I do gel for the same reason, but you’re right…it’s so pricy!

  • https://goallthemiles.wordpress.com/ Lauren

Love your manicure!!! I plan on getting mine done this week too for the race, since to me, it counts as a special event :) I had speed work on the schedule but opted for easy miles instead because my legs were feeling a little tired. But then of course I have been stressing about how I didn’t do speed. Le sigh. #runnerproblems

    • http://www.jenchoosesjoy.com JenChoosesJoy

I think you were smart to listen to your body!!!

  • http://cupcakesandmiles.wordpress.com Amanda B @ Cupcakes and Miles

I’m sorry Charlotte isn’t feeling better! Hopefully she will be back home soon. She is definitely in my thoughts!

It’s been a little rainy this week, actually. Last night our coach had us take our run inside the nearby parking garage. 45 minutes in a parking garage is not my idea of fun. 😉 I don’t care to run in the rain. I will either adjust my schedule, or to the treadmill I will go.

I like to get my toes done once a month, but since I am in my “peak” training, I haven’t been bothering with it. And, I can’t get my hands done! I’m just not capable of having a manicure last more than 48 hours without something happening to it.

  • http://www.minutespermile.com mary @ minutes per mile

taper week will definitely make you crazy. don’t let it get to you! those breakfast club shirts are the best! i think we need to make nashville fitness blogger tees, too. i guess we only have to order two 😉
