Progress and PT

Let’s start with last night aka Transformation Tuesday.

I posted this picture on my Instagram account. (jenchoosesjoy)  These are the finish lines from my first marathon in 2010 and this year’s Chicago Marathon.  After my first one, I didn’t think I’d ever run one again vs. how much I absolutely LOVED running Chicago this year.

I almost didn’t post the pictures and then I wondered why?  Mostly, I just don’t like the idea of before and afters.  I never actually feel like an ‘after’…more like a work in progress.  So, let’s just think of it as a progress pic and I’m proud of my progress:)

Bum Knee update: It’s still a little swollen and sore but making progress.   I ran 9 slow miles on Tuesday and 8 slow miles on Wednesday.

I went to my first PT appointment and I was really nervous.

It ended up being great!  Leah asked some great questions about my running history, stretched, poked, and prodded my legs, scraped all up and down my right quad and knee (which strangely hurt and felt great at the same time), videoed me running on the treadmill and concluded that…

I turn my knee caps inward when I run.  Who knew?  Especially my right knee.  The rest of my form was pretty good, so I have some exercises to strengthen the support muscles.  I will also be going back for more scraping.  I’m sure there’s a better term…I’ll research and get back to you:)

Random life stuff…

I got a haircut

While I was getting ready, this little nugget decided to lay in the sunny spot in front of my sink. Of course I didn’t want to disturb her sunbathing and just worked around her.

I had my favorite lunch of mâché rosettes and strawberries. It never gets old and I’m making efforts to eat a little cleaner since I’m not running as much.

I got busy making some Halloween goodies…recipe coming soon!

And don’t judge, but I was browsing through some gift shops and came across these JOY Christmas tree ornaments. I know it’s way too early, but I just has to buy them!

Don’t forget, I’m running the St. Jude Memphis Marathon to as a Hero to raise money for the St. Jude Children’s Hospital.  I, along with all of the children and families, would greatly appreciate any donation.  No family pays for their medical care, housing, travels, etc…thanks to private donations…incredible!!!  Click HERE to make a donation.

Have you ever had to got to PT?  What for and for how long?

What’s your favorite charity to support?

When do you start decorating for Christmas? I try to wait until after Thanksgiving.

I didn’t realize that superheroes got injured too. Maybe you are human?

Seriously though, sorry you are hurt. Pretty sure PT is not a bad thing though. I’ve been to PT and at the end was really strong and set me up for a great year of running. Running is very important to you so take it easy and get better.

It’s just a wonky knee (that’s the technical term)! I learned so much from the first PT session and I’m going back again today. Thankfully, I can keep running through all of this. Thanks for the encouragement:)

Hi Jen, Was your PT “scraping” perhaps the Graston Technique? Here’s a RW article about it and other types of recovery http://www.runnersworld.com/injury-treatment/sports-therapy-tools-faster-recovery I’ve been in PT for most of the summer for a torn posterior tibialis tendon and micro fractures to my tibia. It’s been a rough recovery but I’m excited to be back out there again. I love my PT and her crew. They are the best! It’s so smart that you took the initiative to get help and fix the problem rather than just letting it fester. Congrats on running for St. Jude’s. They are one of my favorite charities and I hope to run that race someday. This year my charity race is the Disney Glass Slipper Challenge. I’m running it to raise money for Autism Speaks, another of my favorite charities. Best of luck on a speedy recovery.

That’s exactly what is was…thank you for the link! I hope you’re having a good recovery:) I’ve never run the Glass Slipper but I love all things Disney!

I had the same transformation with my first marathon (in 2012, I ran 5:50) and this October (I ran 3:46!). Hated the first, loved the second. Congrats on a great race!

      Wow…that’s incredible progress!!!

Fortunately, I have not had to travel down the PT highway yet. However I do get muscle stimulation for my back on a maintenance basis. All my runs are usually based around proceeds going to cancer research. I’m big on kidney cancer research since it’s the monster that took my mother so I usually run races where I can help with cancer research in someway.

That’s great that you’re able to give back to kidney cancer research through running:)

I think the scraping was probably Graston. I’ve had it done several times this year to treat a knee strain with lots of scar tissue that didn’t want to go away. I was amazed how much it made the inflammation go down the first time I had it done. So much better than anything invasive!

That’s exactly what it was. I’m going back for more today! Hopefully it will work well for me like it did for you:)

My knee was so swollen it was unrecognizable and painful to walk, but after just a few visits I was back running again! Best wishes!

I’m SO glad to hear that you had a good experience during your first PT appointment and that you have some answers and direction; great news! I also love that your little snuggle bunny was so cozy in her little sun spot; I love when Scooter does that, too, and I always hate to disturb him. By the way, my mother-in-law’s name is Joy so I am ALWAYS on the look out for things with Joy in them; I love this ornament! It’s never too early to get in the spirit… 😉
