Track Tuesday: 1200m Repeats

Never miss a Monday!  6 miles with these rad friends…

And 3 solo miles!

I had a great morning meeting…over a green smoothie and water of course!

Oh happy day!  A new case of Cocogo was delivered!  Use code: JENCHOOESJOY (all caps) to save 20% at

I worked up a new recipe: roasted brussels sprouts and sweet potato with a mustard vinagrette…YUM!

Track Prep before bed:

Tuesday: National Coffee Day (YES!!!!)

Track Tuesday: Y’all….it was 70 degrees with 100% humidity on the track.  I sweated buckets!  Like Robin at Knead to Cook says, “it was thick as pea soup!”

2 mile warmup

6 x 1200m at 5k pace (400m recovery)
Goal: 5:12  Actual: 5:10, 5:12, 5:13, 5:11, 5:11, 5:08 (These were tough!)

1 mile cool down

We went straight from the track to the Juice Bar!

And then I celebrated National Coffee Day with a cafe au lait in my favorite St. Jude mug!

In honor of Taco Tuesday: Gang Goals…

What’s your speed workout this week? Or are you tapering for a race?

What’s your next race?

Did you celebrate National Coffee Day?

No speed workout this week, but I do love them! My next race is New York City marathon and I am ready for training to be over!!! I love coffee, can’t live without it.

    • JenChoosesJoy

We were just saying the same thing on our morning run!! I am worn out from NYC training!!!

  • Margaret @youngandrungry

I was able to watch your youtube video. I am just starting out as a blogger and that was SO helpful and encouraging so thank you so much! I was sick yesterday so I am doing my 4×1600 workout tomorrow instead, but I have the Nashville 13.1 on Halloween, which is coming up way too quickly!!

    • JenChoosesJoy

Have a great track workout tomorrow!!!!

  • Kimberly

We’ve been dealing with high humidity here as well – it’s horrible. I hope the Fall weather comes back soon!

    • JenChoosesJoy

I think it’s finally supposed to cool off here tomorrow…fingers crossed!

  • Jennifer

My next race is Marine Corps Marathon. Training has not been great, feeling down about that. But fingers crossed for a good solid 20 miles on Saturday! I drank LOTS of coffee yesterday to celebrate National Coffee Day :) And I got my 2 choose joy shirts in the mail yesterday!!! So exciting! Your blog is great, love the youtube channel and your scopes. Thanks for being so cheerful and full of life!

    • JenChoosesJoy

So much good in the post, and I just know you’ll have a great 20 miler!!!!!!

  • Sarah @ SarahRuns26

I’m tapering! My runs have all been easy this week. Four days until Twin Cities (where hopefully there are no protesters – have you heard about this?) I did not celebrate National Coffee Day, but I celebrate hot tea everyday! :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

I haven’t heard about the protests…heading to google it right now!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Just read the story….stay safe!!!!!

  • gbena

Why wouldn’t someone celebrate National Coffee Day!!! haha. Next race: Ragnar TN. It was Treadmill Tuesday speed work for me due to the rain.

    • JenChoosesJoy

The weather has been so yucky lately! Great job getting your workout done on the treadmill!

  • bubblyrunner

OMG it has been SO muggy these past few days with that tropical storm going on! I can’t wait for the lower humidity to return! I did my 400m repeats today and felt great! Next race isn’t until March (destination race–Rock n Roll half in Dallas). And I definitely celebrated National Coffee Day! I am a hot mess if I don’t have it in the mornings!

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Me too!!!!

  • Jamie Whittendale

No speed workouts for this girl, still working through active recovery from my race on Saturday! Next race race is NYCM! Can’t wait : )

    • JenChoosesJoy

      I’m so excited for NYC!!!

  • Suzy Slane

I need to do a speed work session soon but I still feel a bit creaky after my marathon two weeks ago. It’s crazy how long it takes to recover!

    • JenChoosesJoy

It always takes me a while to ease back into speed work after a marathon!

I am supposed to have some shorter speed work this week…but I am feeling worn down by my training. My legs are dead probably from 2 hard speed workouts last week and then a 22 miler Sat. So I am playing by feel this week. If my legs say no then I am going with that and doing easy runs :).
I actually am having a hard time deciding on my next race. I was planning on Richmond but my husband is now going to be out of the country on a missions trip that day…so trying to decide if I should drive there myself and run it (3 hours away) or change it and run Baltimore…harder course….what would you do? :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

We were just talking about how tired and burned out we’re feeling from training right now! You’re smart to listen to your body.
If you’re trained for Richmond, I would go for it! Otherwise, wait and run Baltimore….just my two cents!

I celebrated national coffee day by having the mocha flavored and caffeinated cliff gel on my 10 mile run yesterday….I actually liked that flavor a lot more than some of the others I have tried:)

    • JenChoosesJoy

      I LOVE coffee flavored gels!

  • Chelsea Ross

New reader here! I love your energy! You remind me of myself 😉

And YES to Ntl Coffee Day!! Of course I celebrated. Cheers!!!

    • JenChoosesJoy

Woohoo!!!! Thanks so much for checking out my blog!!

  • Amanda McJagger

Ha. I have been trying to catch up on your blog for a week. Maybe I’m doing it on my work computer so the web address doesn’t just pop up when I start typing. For the past week, I’ve been tying joychoosesjoy, because I thought that was your name, for a very small amount of time. I saw you commented on Janae’s blog and a lightblub came on. I got it now.

    • JenChoosesJoy

      That’s too funny!

  • Melissa

I got something fabulous in my mailbox today…Can’t wait to wear it Friday! :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

WOOHOO….that makes me super duper happy!!!

  • Cathy Mores

Last speed session yesterday before my next race on 10/11 — my favorite cutdown workout! 1mi w/u, then 4×400 with 200 recovery each at 10k, 5k, and 3k paces. It’s a beast but I know I’m ready! and oh yes, I drank ALL the coffee yesterday! :)

    • JenChoosesJoy

      Wow…that’s an awesome workout!!!!

  • Laura Olinger

I’ve got my last race, a 10K, of a three weekend streak. I decided to let last weekend’s 5K serve as my speed work for the week. But, I do love doing 1200s though I couldn’t tell you why!

    • JenChoosesJoy

You might be the only runner that likes 1200’s! Also, congrats on three weekends of racing!!!!

  • Running ‘N’ Reading

Great job, Jen! I had a four mile tempo progression run (say that three times fast!) yesterday and I could feel it on my run today; thank goodness for easy run days – ha!

  • mary @ minutes per mile

tuesday was stinking HUMID! nice job on those 1200s. that’s such an awkward distance for me.

  • Faith Brewer

    Those brussel sprouts look amazing!

  • Amanda B @ Cupcakes and Miles

Just got back from my speedwork actually. 200s and 300s today (each x6), and…I crushed it! 😉
