Whole Body Cryotherapy

I’ve been wanting to try the new Select Cryo since it opened in Nashville. I’m a big believer in post-run ice baths to reduce inflammation and speed recovery.  This was definitely an ice bath on steroids and the timing was perfect after a tough track workout!

They take appointments but can also accommodate walk-ins.  You’ll fill out a liability waiver before your first session.  It only takes a minute and then you’re ready to go!

Cryotherapy Applications (per Select Cryo):

  • Quicker exercise recovery!
  • Faster recovery from injuries
  • Chronic pain relief
  • Increased energy
  • Boost testerone
  • Better sleep
  • Helps ease depression
  • Relieves arthritis inflammation and soreness
  • Burns over 500 calories per session

What to Wear:

  • Underwear, sports bra, fitted shorts/compression shorts.  (I wore my run shorts, sports bra, and kept my socks and sneakers on.)
  • You will be provided with socks, slippers, and a robe if you need them.

What to Expect:

  • You privately change, get into the booth, and then an employee will join you in your room for the duration of cryotherapy.
  • Your initial treatment will last 2 minutes (or longer if you’re up for it!).  You can stop at any time.  I stayed in for 3 minutes.
  • Last 30 seconds feel the coldest.
  • Cold, dry nitrogen vapor
  • Even cooling over the entire body.
  • Constant monitoring by operator.

Final Thoughts:

  • I was so glad the employee stayed with me for the session.  We chatted the whole time and it was an excellent distraction.
  • Yes, it’s cold, but it doesn’t hurt.  It’s just uncomfortable.
  • Next time I will bring gloves.
  • Ice baths last 10 minutes.  This was only 3 minutes.  Even if it’s colder, I love that it’s over with so quickly!
  • I stayed cold for about an hour after my session.
  • I will definitely return!

    I have always been curious about Cryotherapy. I haven’t tried it out yet. Thanks for the honest review. I take ice baths in the summer after a hard workout and Epsom salt baths in the winter. When I lived in Alaska, temps got down to -60F and that is about as cold as I have been.

      -60 is CRAZY!!!!! You don’t need cryo….you can just step outside!

    I am very skeptical about that calorie burn number. If it wasn’t promoted with that ‘feature’ I’d have more faith in the other benefits – the ones that pertain to athletes! :) Regarding recovery , it doesn’t hurt to try anything! Thanks for the recap.

      I almost didn’t include the calorie info. I don’t pay attention to calories and wasn’t using it for that purpose. I never want to to promote “quick fix” or weight loss anything!

        Yes! Totally was not placing that on you. Sorry. I just don’t understand because I think it kind of hurts their credibility and gets away from the real purpose. Of course, this is a runner “talking” so what do I know about what others’ want and what will get them in there :)

    My coach keeps putting “Crytherapy” after my races, but I’ve never done it and he never asks! I’d definitely be down to try it, but I’m not sure how expensive it is or where there’s one in my area.

      Ours is $30 for your first visit. It’s pricey, but it helped me recover and that’s worth it!

    I have seen people do this on talk shows and it looks so cold, but if it helps with pain and injury recovery, then it is worth a shot.

    We have one at work that’s not up and running yet. Ours is more of a spray tan-like experience LOL. Just curious how much did it cost?

      The first visit was $30. I think it’s $50 after that, but I’m going to buy a package to lower the price per visit!

    Wait, whaaaaat?! I have NEVER heard of this before! That’s incredible!!! I’ve done an ice bath once or twice during ultra training and it was painful. My daughter would sit beside me and giggle. It was fine until the water moved, which is what she would do just to get a reaction. Ha! Stinker. That’s so cool you got to try this out!

    This is so cool! I know ice baths are supposed to be great but I can’t fathom sitting in one for 10 minutes! Do you do it only after long runs?

      I do them after any hard effort workout….long runs, track, tempos, etc…

    I’ve been wanting to try this forever, I need to find a place by me!! I do take ice baths, not as much as I should though. Just thinking of my ice bath awaiting me in 11 days time makes me want to squirm!!!

    Oh my gracious. I’m from Michigan so I know cold…but I could never do that! Good for you girl! :)
    -I like a nice ice bath after a hard workout or run. I especially liked it when my daughters kiddie pool was up and we’d fill it up and I’d sit in it with her, good distraction although she never seemed to notice how darn cold it was!! :) kids:)

    I first heard of this on Kelly and Michael. I don’t like to be cold but it’s nice that it is so short. Not sure if you could ever talk me into trying it though!

    Very interesting! I could see doing this in the summer, but no so much during the winter when it already feels like you’re in an icebox for your runs.

    Have you seen those float spa things? They’re pods filled with saltwater which is supposed to feel like zero-gravity and be SUPER relaxing.

      No frostbite! I think it’s because you’re only in the booth for 3 minutes. Plus, I kept my shoes and socks on.

    This is all the rage here in Toronto too. I have never tried it – I’m scared! I have never taken an ice bath because I HATE the feeling of being cold. I guess everybody does…but I just don’t feel like I would be able to tolerate it. Who knows how I even tolerate Canadian winters. I feel like I’m in a Cryo Chamber from November – March!
