Yasso 800’s in DC


Jason and I had a gorgeous run to the Lincoln Memorial, along the Potomac River, through Georgetown…..

And ended at Founding Farmers for breakfast!

The weather really has been perfection in DC, so I headed out for some shopping in Georgetown….

Had a nice patio lunch….

And walked back to the hotel.  I LOVE that I’ve been able to walk almost everywhere in DC!!!

I met Jason for drinks and a bite at Teddy and the Bully Bar.

And had the most amazing frosted Halloween brownie from Dean and Deluca for dessert!!!!

Track Tuesday (minus the track):

If you remember, I wrote about doing some Yasso-style 800’s a couple of weeks ago.  Today, I did the full Yasso workout.  10 x 800m (400m recovery)

Rather than hunt down an open track I opted to do my workout on the treadmill.  It’s not my first choice, but my hotel has a rad gym!

2 mile warmup

10 x 800m (400m recovery) 1-9 @ 3:34, 10 @ 3:29
(1% incline.  My normal goal would be a 3:36, but I upped my pace to account for the treadmill.)

1 mile cool down

I put on some dry clothes and met Jason for…wait for it…oatmeal!

Oh, and I couldn’t let Taco Tuesday go by without a post for Instagram!

And, the purpose of me coming to DC….we were finally able to have a birthday dinner for Jason!!!

Of course, he requested Rasika.  It’s his favorite restaurant in DC.  This was the third or fourth time he’s been this month.

One of my favorite things in our hotel is their nightly cookie table!

Each night’s cookie recipe is from a different President or First Lady.  This was Michelle Obama’s favorite cookie recipe:

Further proof that I’m a big dork: one of the guests staying on our floor requires 24/7 security to sit outside their door.  I’m fascinated and have been trying to find out who it is to no avail.  It’s time for me to head home and I haven’t solved the mystery.  Jason did manage to get a creepy stalker picture of the security guard, lol! It’s just further proof that he ‘gets me.’

Indian food….yay or nay?  I’m really trying to love it.  It’s Jason’s favorite, but even the mild dishes are SOOOO spicy!

Do you do your speed work outside or on a treadmill?  This was the first time for me using a treadmill for a track workout.

      On the track I’m constantly watching my Garmin in an effort to hit my splits. It was nice to just set the treadmill pace and run!

    I can’t handle spicy food much. I’m a wimp!! I’ve done speed work on the treadmill due to child care and work issues. I like it because you just set and go. But, I feel like I can run faster on the track. It takes more discipline to run your paced on the track.

      You’re so right! On the track, I’m constantly watching my Garmin. The treadmill makes it so easy to just settle into my pace.

    I do my speed work on the treadmill quite often. It may not be ideal, but it works. I like Indian food but don’t actually have any locally, so I don’t get it much. Looks like a fun trip! And the cookies look delicious!

      I think speed work on the treadmill is excellent mental training. It was so much harder to not quit!

    DC is an excellent mini vacation in the fall! I love it. Oatmeal is ALWAYS a good option :)
    I would definitely have been walking by the door to see who was inside. Lol.
    I adore Indian food. Its so easy to find vegetarian options with Indian! I have few friends who share my adoration so I tend to cook it myself.
    I use to enjoy speed work outside but I’ve grown to enjoy it more inside on the dreadmill. 😉

      Lately I’ve been using the treadmill for recovery runs, so my body was super confused when I had to run fast on it!

    LOVE Rasika! And Founding Farmer’s oatmeal! Thank goodness the one in Georgetown isn’t super close to where I live, because I would be there every weekend. I do speed workout on a treadmill since I don’t have a track close by my house.

    Glad you are enjoying DC! I think my favorite thing about living here is that there are tons of runners. That means races galore every weekend, and even some on the weekdays. :) I am, however, jealous of your running group. I’ve yet to find a group that runs weekday mornings, so I usually go solo. By the way, If you get a chance, POV at the W hotel is a fun spot for mimosas and a great view – if you haven’t already been!

    I need to “un-see” that frosted halloween brownie, because now I’m going to try to recreate it…. I love Dean and DeLuca. I used to love Indian food in my 20’s, but in my 40’s, it’s just too heavy for me and my stomach does not feel good after I have it (my stomach does however handle brownies and wine perfectly fine…it doesn’t make sense but it it the truth)

    I used to love Indian food…and then I went to India and ate nothing but Indian food for a month and haven’t been able to stomach it since. That was 4 years ago! Looks like a perfect weekend in DC! Glad you enjoyed it! I find that I sometimes prefer 800s on the treadmill because I’ve never lived close enough to a track!

    Love this post. So fun you get to travel sometimes with the hubs! Back in the day I used to do speed on the TM… I could knock it out of the park, and than coach was like get on the pavement — that’s where you race LOL.

      I’ve noticed that some runners do their speed work on the road for that reason. Most of us don’t race on the track or treadmill. It’s a great point!

    I’m kind of afraid to run really fast on the TM. I’ve never done actual speed work, just tempo paces. I like to do my easy/recovery runs on the TM.

    I love Indian food, but I grew up eating it so I’m used to it. And I have never done track work on the treadmill because I am SO SLOW on that thing. I run at a harder effort but at a slower pace on the treadmill and I would get so discouraged. Where I could run 3 min 800s on the track, I’d only be able to do 3:15s on the treadmill, etc.

    I have a running question for you if you do not mind. You run a ton of miles. I am crazy jealous that you body tolerates it, that you have the time, and that you have the love of running to do it. My question is if it is ever a struggle for you? Do you ever not feel like running? You seem to run with friends a lot which I am sure helps with motivation. I often run alone and week day 6-7 milers become a mental struggle at times. Just curious what gets you out there day after day and running the mileage that you do?

      I absolutely have days where I don’t want to run!!! You’re right that meeting up with friends makes a huge difference. Sometimes its the accountability and other times it’s just knowing that it will be fun once I’m with them.
      More than anything, when I have a day that I don’t want to run, I just remember how crappy I’ll feel if I skip the run. I try to keep 2 days a week to run by myself and I don’t care how many miles or what my pace. Those ‘easy’, laid-back runs help to keep me motivated.

    I’m always like, “Bring on the spice!” I love spicy food, especially Indian. When my husband and I started dating, his favorite flavor was “plain” but now he loves Indian too. He still orders everything mild, with about 3 glasses of water, though. I just love that there are so many vegetarian options.

    DO is one of my favorite places! Haha I love that you were trying to find out who was staying there. I would’ve done the same thing! My husband LOVES indian food but I just do not. I’ve tried many dishes and many times but if we order in, I usually make myself something else and eat lots of naan!

    I hardly ever run on a treadmill, 2x’s for my past marathon training. And that was more of a self punishment for sleeping in and not being able to run before 5:40am when I have to get ready for work.
